Does it open up, or is there a way to tell the day/date from the 2 little dots?

The men's Nixon Newton Watch indicates the time with the two dots. The bigger dot would represent the 'Big Hand' on a regular wall clock. The date is also shown on the watch face using the button to get to another 'screen', so to speak.

No way. You probably need at least a 20 M resistant watch for that.

The Nixon Newton Watch is not made for the pool or ocean. It will only be able to handle some rain and splashes.

The Nixon Newton Watch can handle some rain, water splashes, etc. It is rated at 30 meters for water resistance.

The Nixon Newton Watch is 100m stainless steel with hardened mineral crystal overlay. It is purely a matter of personal opinion as to if it would break easy or hold up if you land on it.
